Viewing and configuring a dataset

You can view contents of a dataset from HCL OneTest™ Server when you create datasets in desktop clients. If you are a Project Owner or Tester, you can configure the current row for a dataset so that the variable data is selected from the configured row instead of the first row of a dataset during a test run.

Before you begin

You must have completed the following tasks:

  • Created one or more datasets and encrypted at least one dataset with a password in the test assets in desktop clients and added to the Git repository.
  • Created a project in HCL OneTest Server. See Creating a project.
  • Configured the repository that contains the test assets in your project. See Adding repositories.
  • Created a classification for an encrypted dataset. See Creating a classification.

About this task

A dataset contains variable data for tests to use when they run. If you have any dataset in your test assets, you can view the content of a dataset from HCL OneTest Server. The datasets residing in the Git repository are listed in the Dataset page.

At this moment, you can only set the current row for a dataset from the Dataset page. If you want to add, modify, or remove data from a dataset, you can do so by using a desktop client.

If you know an encrypted dataset password, you can change the classification assigned to an encrypted dataset from the Dataset page.

Notes:
  • Only a Project Owner or a project member who has been added as Tester can view and edit the dataset.
  • As a Viewer, if you try to access the Dataset or Data Security page, an error message is displayed because you do not have permissions to view these pages. For more information about roles, see Managing access to projects.
  • To view the content of an encrypted dataset, you must provide the password set in the desktop client for a dataset.

The following tasks explain how to view and configure datasets:

Viewing a dataset

You can use the Dataset page to view the content of a dataset from HCL OneTest Server.

Procedure

  1. Log in to HCL OneTest Server and open your project.
  2. From the Dataset page, find the dataset that you are interested in and expand the dataset by clicking the Expand icon right arrow.
Note: You can click the Dataset Name field to sort datasets by name (A to Z or Z to A). Alternatively, you can use the search option to search dataset by name.

Results

You have viewed the content of a dataset.

Viewing an encrypted dataset

You can use the Dataset page to view the content of an encrypted dataset from HCL OneTest Server.

Procedure

  1. From the HCL OneTest Server UI, navigate to the Dataset page.
  2. You must perform the following sub steps if you have created a classification but yet to add an encrypted dataset to it:
    1. Find an encrypted dataset that you are interested in and click the Lock icon lock icon from the Actions column of a dataset.
    2. In the Edit Security for Dataset window, select a classification from the list and enter the password set for a dataset.
    3. Click Save.
  3. Right-click the encrypted column and click Show encrypted data.

    view encrypted dataset column

You can right-click the decrypted column and select Hide encrypted data to encrypt the data again.

    Decrypt data

Important: The Show encrypted data option is available only when you have added the encrypted dataset to respective classification.

Results

You have viewed the content of an encrypted dataset.

Changing classification for an encrypted dataset

You can move the encrypted dataset from one classification to another by changing the classification for an encrypted dataset from the Dataset page.

Procedure

  1. From the HCL OneTest Server UI, navigate to the Dataset page.
  2. Find an encrypted dataset for which you want to change the classification and click the Lock icon lock icon from the Actions column of a dataset.
  3. In the Edit security for dataset window:
    1. Choose the classification from the list.
    2. Enter a password for a dataset that was set in the desktop client.
    3. Click Save.
    Notes:
    • To change the classification for an encrypted dataset, you must have created at least two or more classifications.
    • You can perform this task only if you know the password set for a dataset in the desktop client.

Results

You have changed the classification for an encrypted dataset.

Setting the current row for a dataset

You can set the current row for a dataset so that during tests run the variable data is selected from the configured row instead of the starting row of a dataset.

Procedure

  1. From the HCL OneTest Server UI, navigate to the Dataset page.
  2. Find the dataset you are interested in and click the Settings icon settings icon from the Actions column of a dataset.
  3. In the Edit configuration settings window, use an up-down control button to increment or decrement the value.
  4. Click Save.

Alternatively, to set the current row, right-click the row and select Set as current row.

Results

You have configured the current row for a dataset.
